Course Overview

The Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program (CCIP) is a voluntary program designed primarily for people interested in or involved with clinical education, such as clinical instructors, site coordinators of clinical education, and directors of clinical education. It is recognized by APTA as a clinical instructor education and credentialing program. This course provides enhanced clinical education skills for instructors.

Physical therapists who have been clinical instructors for University of Pittsburgh students in the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program who are interested in becoming certified clinical instructors.

This program is offered at no cost to those who qualify. 

Program Goals
  • Plan and prepare for physical therapy students during their clinical education experience.
  • Support continuing education through questioning and effective feedback.
  • Acquire performance evaluation skills.
  • Identify and manage students with exceptional situations.
  • Recognize legal implications for clinical educators, including issues presented by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Participant Expectations and Course Components

This synchronous, online program is comprised of six modules and a written assessment.

Required materials include:

  • Complete an online registration for the course.
  • Upload a copy of or provide a link to current PT or PTA license (if applicable).
  • Approval of registration, after review, by the course trainer.

Included as part of APTAs course registration are the Level 1 manual, Assessment Center*, CI credential (PTs and PTAs only) and continuing education unit certificate(s), CI credential pin and registry in an APTA database. 

*The Assessment Center provides an opportunity to apply information from the program in various simulated situations and stations. Successful completion of all stations in the Assessment Center results in the awarding of APTA CI credentialing.
